Youth council to start fundraising events

C. WELLINGTON TWP. –  The community could soon see a youth council formed to raise funds for people in need.

The brainchild of grade 11 student Trystan Johnston, the initial seed money would be provided by the Waterloo Wellington Community Futures Development Corporation, but Johnston said in an interview he expected to receive less than $1,000 to get up and running.

He said the aim of the council is to raise funds for families in need, to help get youth off the street, “and get them involved.”

He predicted, “We’ll come up with an event that … will have a benefit group.” He said that could include anything from the food bank to a child who needs help paying for equipment to play hockey.

Johnston said anyone who wants to get involved can contact him at cwyouthcouncil@hotmail.com, and leave a name and contact information.

Johnston said he came up with idea and approached the Futures Corporation and, “They liked it. We just need to get a start.”

He explained that there are already “four or five” people interested in it now, and the council would run through the school year.

Johnston lives in Fergus and attends Centre Wellington District High School.

He added that there could be bonuses for students who become involved with the council.

He said once events are planned, students could volunteer at them and use the hours towards their volunteer credits required for graduation
