The statistic is staggering. It is estimated that 12 people will die by suicide today and every day in Canada.
Countless other individuals will attempt to end their life or question its value. The stories are heartbreaking.
The ripple effects of suicide are broad. Family, friends and whole communities are impacted. People are left asking the question: “Why?”
This year’s World Suicide Prevention Day theme is “working together to prevent suicide.”
On Sept. 10, the Suicide Awareness Council of Wellington Dufferin invites the community to work collaboratively to prevent suicide in cities, towns and villages across the counties.
When someone is struggling, the first step is taking a moment to check in with them and listen supportively and compassionately to what they have to say. Help them look for resources.
The Suicide Awareness Council invites the community to pick-up a free bag of orange tulip bulbs at various sites across Wellington and Dufferin counties. Locations include Canadian Mental Health Association offices and Family Health Teams.
The community is also invited to light a candle and place it near a window at 8pm on Sept. 10.
The candle is a beacon of caring and compassion. The candle also recognizes those who have been bereaved by suicide and for the survivors of suicide.
“Our collective actions and words give a powerful voice to the difference each and every one of us, alone and together, can make in spreading the message that help, hope and healing are possible,” organizers say.
