Last weekend the Woolwich Thrashers junior and intermediate Sledge Hockey teams travelled to London, to participate in the London Blizzard Sledge Hockey Tournament.
The event attracted clubs from as far away as Edmonton and the Swedish Paralympic team in the intermediate division.
Expectations were high for both Thrashers teams going into the weekend.
Troy Clemmer and Brandon Lalonde of Drayton and Hunter Karn of Fergus play for the Junior team.
Intermediates from Wellington County are: Dean Clemmer of Drayton, Jason and Kevin Menkveld, Evan and Carl Kraayenbrink of the Clifford area and Ken and Devon Sivill of the Conn area.
In a close back-and-forth match, the intermediates tied its first game of the weekend 2-2 with the Cruisers Silver Streaks from Brampton.
In the second game, the intermediates lost a close game to the Buffalo Sabres, 2-0, and lost the final game of the weekend 1-0 to the eventual intermediate C+ division champions, Kawartha Blazers.
In the junior division, the Thrashers opened the weekend on Friday with a 2-0 victory over the Hamilton Sledgehammers. Success continued on Saturday morning, as the Thrashers defeated the Elmvale Cubs 6-0.
In the final round-robin game, the Thrashers took on the host London Blizzard in a tightly fought game that would decide who would move onto the elimination round.
The Thrashers held on for a 1-0 win to finish in first place in their division with a perfect 3-0 round-robin record.
In Sunday’s semi-final, the Thrashers found themselves up against the Cruisers Juniors from Brampton, winning 4-0 to move onto the final. In the junior division final, the Thrashers played the same Hamilton team they beat in their opening game.
The final game was close from start-to-finish, with the Thrashers again winning 2-0.
