Police are reminding residents to stay off frozen water bodies after a senior trying to save her dog had to be rescued from a frozen pond.
On April 10 at about 9am emergency crews responded to a private pond on Sideroad 30 near Wellington Road 26 in Centre Wellington.
Wellington County OPP officials say a 76-year-old trying to rescue her dog fell through the ice and was trapped in the frigid water.
Upon arrival police officers entered the water and pulled the woman to safety.
Centre Wellington firefighters and Guelph-Wellington paramedics provided medical assistance and the woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of exposure.
“The dog was able to get out on its own and was unharmed,” police stated in a press release.
The OPP is reminding everyone to exercise caution around water bodies.
“If the ice can’t support the weight of an animal or child, it definitely can’t support the weight of a would-be rescuer,” police stated. “Please exercise extreme caution when dealing with thin ice.”
