Back for a fourth consecutive year, Wightman Telecom’s Heels for Hospitals is set for Oct. 20.
Men, women and children from several counties are coming together to show their support for local hospitals, walking 1 kilometre in their high heels, (some choose to wear heels, others wear their favorite shoes).
Meeting at the Clifford Rotary Pavilion on Brown Street, participants will walk approximately one kilometre up Allan Street and back.
The event takes place on Oct. 20 at 10am.
Inspired by the giving spirit of Paul and Blair Wightman, coordinator Hope Robertson said Heels for Hospitals is another way of contributing to the community and giving back.
“It’s more important now than ever before to band together and show support for our local communities. This is just one unique way of doing that,” said Robertson.
And do that they will. The Wightman’s have committed to donating $20 for every participant in this year’s event and they’ve upped the ante with a corporate challenge.
The company is challenging fellow local businesses to participate in the event by giving away a grand prize: the team who brings in the most pledges will be awarded a full catered-in holiday lunch, sponsored by Wightman Telecom.
“This is an excellent way to contribute to your local hospital, while having a blast,” said Robertson. “And the grand prize is a great reward.”
For the second year in a row, Nick Sawicki from 101.7 The One will be joining in the action, wearing a pair of high heels (donated by Knapps Shoes in Listowel) and walking with participants.
After the walk, participants will enjoy a wide array of refreshments.
Organizers Hope Robertson, Carolyn Schiestel and Susan Rawn thought the innovative and unconventional idea to take pledges and walked one kilometre in high heels would be a fun way to raise awareness and money for local hospitals.
All proceeds raised are pledged to the CKNX Radiothon. In its first three years, the event has raised more than $17,000.
