An enquiry about using two A.J. Casson paintings on promotional plaques in Rockwood has led to the revelation the Group of Seven painter has many other works set in the village.
Last week, at the request of the township’s heritage committee, Guelph-Eramosa Mayor Chris White contacted Casson’s estate to enquire about the use of Mill Houses and Main Street, Rockwood for art plaques in the village.
White said he spent about half an hour on the phone with Casson’s daughter, who asked which paintings the township was interested in.
White replied he thought there were only two, but he was pleasantly surprised when told there are actually “tons” of paintings from the Rockwood area.
Councillor Doug Breen said it would be interesting to see what else is in the Rockwood collection.
White agreed and said Casson’s daughter seemed to be in favour of the township’s use of the paintings on plaques, which, he explained, would promote the heritage of the area and raise awareness of Casson’s contributions.
