Wellington Warrior Challenge raises over $27,000

“Wellington Warriors” have risen to the challenge, raising $27,491 for cancer research.

This marks the 5th year the Canadian Cancer Society has held the Wellington Warrior Challenge at Cox Creek Cellars.

The Wellington Warrior Challenge isn’t your average charity run.

Event chairman Nancy Culham stated the 5km run demands endurance to trek through the unknown, courage to overcome uncompromising obstacles, and a complete lack of shame to sludge through dirt and mud – all in the name of a good cause.

Culham said “Although it’s called a mud run … it’s more of a pond run … there’s lots of water.”

This year the run included 30 obstacles – a lot more than in previous years.

Culham described the run as something everyone, regardless of ability, can do.

There were options to bypass certain obstacles … by choice or perhaps if an individual cannot swim.

“We just wanted to make it a fun event for everyone,” said Culham. She noted the Grapes of Wrath obstacle challenge was the first such event held through the Canadian Cancer Society.

“This one we started about five years ago with five obstacles … it’s grown since then,” Culham said.

“It is a great fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.” She laughed, adding, “This is the first year we’ve actually had a nice day for this.”

Culham said there were 190 participants registered for this year’s event.

The funds also help cover programs such as driving people to cancer treatments if needed, home support, education, providing services to people going through the battle with cancer as well as their caregivers.

She noted two major sponsors for the event continue to be Cox Creek Cellars and Robinson GMC.
