A new skateboard/BMX park, spearheaded by the Arthur Lions Club, has a tentative location and a new committee.
On April 9, Wellington North council formed an advisory committee, which includes three members of council and three members representing the Lions Club.
In his report, CAO Mike Givens said the township has met informally with the Arthur Lions Club to discuss the project, which is being developed in conjunction with the town’s 150th birthday in 2022.
The preferred location is in the Fredrick Street West and Francis Street West area.
Givens said the Grand River Conservation Authority would not object to the park as long as it was located outside the one-in-20-year flood plain. The lands are already zoned for “passive recreation.”
“I don’t know where we’d be without community service clubs that put forth this kind of effort,” said councillor Steve McCabe.
“The location is key as well and I look forward to helping you guys raise funds.”
Two Lions members, Al Rawlins and Brent Barnes, attended the meeting and stated they were happy with the support from council so far.
They added the club will be seeking feedback from nearby residents before fundraising starts.
“It shows a lot of forward thinking on our community,” said councillor Dan Yake.
The project is expected to cost $150,000 to $175,000, with money raised mostly through the Lion’s fundraising efforts.
Council approved the recommendation to provide financial support for promotional signage and appointed Lennox, McCabe and councillor Lisa Hern to the advisory council. Councillor Sherry Burke was absent.
