Councillors here have endorsed the idea of designating Highway 6 from Guelph to Tobermory as Veterans Way.
In fact, many municipalities in Wellington County have already designated local roads as Veterans Way – and some have more than one.
Minto is one of those communities, with streets designated in Harriston and Clifford.
Late last year, Centre Wellington voiced no objections to the proposal northern even though it has a Veterans Way in that community.
Councillors in Wellington North reviewed a proposal submitted by Donald Taylor, a Veterans Service Officer with Wiarton Legion Branch 208.
Taylor is chairman of a committee asking the Ministry of Transportation designate Highway 6 from the north end of Guelph to Tobermory.
The MTO, however, has asked all municipalities along the corridor to approve the idea by a resolution of council.
Taylor wrote, “the reason for this dedication is, to honour and remember all Canadian veterans that fought or died for our country during all wars and peace keeping duties so that this country remains free for all Canadians.”
Wellington North Mayor Mike Broomhead said he had heard talk of the idea before.
“I think we should support it,” Broomhead said.
After council agreed, Broomhead said “I’m not sure where it will go from here, but we’ve given it our support.”
