Statistics show county residents and businesses are diverting 33% of their waste from landfills.
Last year alone, over 11,000 tonnes of waste was diverted from county landfill sites. While that figure is good, there is still a lot of waste that unnecessarily makes it way into landfills.
With that idea in mind – and coinciding with Waste Reduction Week from Oct. 17 to 23 – the county’s solid waste services division wants to remind local residents and businesses of several waste diversion programs.
Those include:
– the regular recycling program for containers and paper products;
– selling backyard composters ($30), each of which can divert an average of 100kg per year;
– seven electronic recycling events annually;
– three reuse centres throughout the county;
– seven household hazardous waste days for items such as motor oil, antifreeze, etc.;
– accepting appliances and scrap metal at all county waste facilities;
– textile drop-off bins located at all waste facilities;
– wood and brush collection at four waste facilities (with annual Christmas tree pick-up); and
– accepting old tires at all waste facilities.
