Wellington County receives climate grant

GUELPH – Wellington County was recently granted $125,000 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) climate change initiative to help address staffing gaps and increase its capacity to adapt to the effects of climate change or to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The county is among 59 communities across Canada that will receive the funding over two years to fund up to 80 per cent of a climate change coordinator position.

The county will use the funding to dedicate staff to activities such as adding climate change practices into daily municipal processes.

The county states in a press release the climate change coordinator will confirm and advance the municipality’s corporate response to climate change and develop and maintain a local action plan to address current and projected future climate conditions.

Warden Kelly Linton stated, “This funding will assist the county with the development and implementation of the county’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction and adaptation plan.”
