GUELPH/ERAMOSA – The Wellington County Plowmen’s Match returns this fall.
The event is a competition of farmers plowing rows, which are then judged on a number of criteria including form and uniformity.
It might seem kind of niche, but farmers know how important it is to get the plowing right.
“When you keep it straight, you can go faster. But it takes skill,” said Joe Parkinson, an organizer of the plowing match.
“Some will use horses; some will use antique tractors, and some will use steam engines. We hope we get a good turnout this year.”
The plowing match is slated for Sept. 17 at 5957 5th Line, in Oustic from 10am to 2pm.
Competitors must pre-register but there is no admission fee for the general public.
A barbecue chicken lunch will be served for those who pre-order. The meal can be eaten on site (noon to 1pm) or for take-away (noon to 2pm).
Cost is $20 and includes chicken, potato salad, a bun and butter and a dessert. Orders must be placed before Sept. 8. Call or text 226-820-0766 or email erinplowingmatch@gmail.com.
