Wellington County Grade 9 and 10 students beat provincial average in EQAO testing

WELLINGTON CTY. – Grade 9 and 10 students in both Wellington County school boards exceeded provincial averages on standardized testing in the 2018-19 school year.

Grade 9

In Grade 9 students take an Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) standardized math test.

A higher percentage of students from the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) and Wellington Catholic District School Board (WCDSB) met the standards than the provincial averages of 84 per cent for academic stream and 44% for applied stream.

In the UGDSB 91% of Grade 9 students in the academic stream met the provincial standard while 69% of the students in the applied stream met the provincial standard.

While the same percentage of academic stream students met provincial standards the last two years (91%), the number of students in the applied stream that met the provincial standard in 2018-19 was up six percentage points from 2017-18 (63%).

In the WCDSB, 88% of academic math students and 54% of students in the applied stream met the provincial standard.

While the percentage of students in academic math held consistent between 2017-18 and 2018-19, this year saw a slight drop in successful applied math students from 55% in 2017-18.

In the UGDSB boys out performed girls in both the applied stream (71% to 66%) and the academic stream (92% to 89%).

In the WCDSB in the applied stream boys out performed girls 68% to 33%; however in academic math stream the number of boys and girls who were successful were at par at 88%.

“As the Ministry of Education continues to focus efforts on improving outcomes in mathematics learning and achievement, we too have made this a priority in our professional development planning for the 2019-20 school year,” said WCDSB director of education Tamara Nugent in press release.

Grade 10

In Grade 10 students take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Again, both Wellington County School Boards has success rates higher than the provincial average (80%).

Eighty-three per cent of first time eligible students at UGDSB and 82% at WCDSB met provincial expectations.

At the UGDSB the percentage of successful students in 2018-19 was higher than the 79% success rate in 2017-18.

In both boards girls outperformed boys:

– UGDSB: 90% of girls, 76% of boys; and

– WCDSB: 89% of girls and 74% of boys.
