Wellington County getting into the CIP game

Centre Wellington Mayor Kelly Linton says Wellington County is considering getting into the CIP (Community Improvement Plan) game.

On Sept. 28, Linton said the township is moving ahead with its own CIP and conversations were initiated with Wellington County representatives.

Discussion centred around the county involvement in the CIP – “their development charges are a lot higher than ours and the question whether the county might initiate its own CIP program or buy into ours.”

Linton said the county has moved very quickly, passing a resolution stating it would participate in a CIP process – but two options are being considered.

One would allow local municipalities to drive the CIP, which would be supported by the county.

“Obviously that was the option I indicated that I would support because I believe the CIP needs to be locally driven,” said Linton.

The second option would be for the county to develop its own CIP and then work with municipalities.

“But the county wants to be in the CIP game which is great News,” Linton said.

He added that county Warden George Bridge “recognizes the time sensitivity of using our CIP to drive the process with the lands we’ve identified as priorities already.”

Linton added the county has indicated it plans to work quickly to get something in place so people who want to develop in Centre Wellington will not only be able to get incentives from the township, but also from the county.

“I’m not sure what that is going to look like yet, but it is good News they decided to go in this direction,” he said.
