Wellington Catholic District School Board kindergarten registration opens Jan. 6

GUELPH – The Wellington Catholic District School Board  (WCDSB) invites families to register their children for kindergarten beginning Jan. 6 for the 2025-26 school year.

Kindergarten registration is set to run until Feb. 5 and is available online.

“To assist in optimal planning for kindergarten programs for the upcoming school year, we encourage families to register within this registration period,” officials state in a press release.

To attend year one kindergarten in September, students must be four-years-old on or before Dec. 31.

For those inquiring about starting in year two kindergarten, children must be five-years-old on or before Dec. 31.

“The kindergarten program is a two-year experience that builds community and provides rich and inclusive learning for all children within a faith-based education environment,” officials state.

The purpose of the program is to establish a strong foundation for learning in the early years, and to do so in a safe and caring play-based learning environment.

It is designed to help children build on their prior knowledge and experiences, form concepts, acquire foundational skills, and form positive attitudes towards learning.

In addition, it lays the foundation for children’s success throughout their school years.

Where sufficient interest exists, before and after school programs are also available to supplement the kindergarten experience.

“Wellington Catholic welcomes your child to kindergarten,” states superintendent of student achievement Marylin Dawson.

“Our kindergarten program provides high-quality learning opportunities for all students by focusing on each child’s prior knowledge and strengths while fostering growth and development.

“We believe that each child has unlimited potential and we can’t wait to be part of their education journey.

“Your child will be well supported through play-based learning in a faith-based community,” Dawson states.

“We work alongside families to ensure a safe, caring, and inclusive learning environment where students can believe, belong, and be extraordinary.”

IB Primary Years Programme

Through the WCDSB, families interested in having their child enter school immersed in an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme have the option to do so at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Guelph.

Sacred Heart has been certified as the only local public provider of the IB Primary Years Programme, and only the second in Ontario.

“For children in kindergarten to age 12, the Primary Years Programme nurtures and develops young students as caring, active participants in a lifelong journey of learning by offering an inquiry-based curriculum framework that builds conceptual understanding,” officials state in the release.

“The program has evolved to become a world leader in future-focused education, recognized as an example of best educational practice globally, responding to the challenges and opportunities facing young students in our rapidly changing world,” the release continues.

“As well, the Primary Years Programme provides education that promotes critical thinking skills and allows elementary students to begin their French studies in kindergarten.”

Limited space is available and registrations must be completed by Feb. 3 to be considered for this program.
