The Wellington Advertiser is celebrating its 50th anniversary at the Wellington County Museum and Archives on April 4.
“This anniversary celebrates our history and honours the many good employees over the years who have helped us achieve the significant milestone of five decades in business,” said publisher Dave Adsett.
To coincide with the celebration, the archives is launching the complete digitization of the Advertiser from its very first edition on March 12, 1968 to March 2018.
“We are going to have historical displays set up relating to the Wellington Advertiser and its 50 years of existence here in the archives,” said archivist Karen Wagner.
“And at the same time, because we have several public computers accessible, we will have it available to anyone who comes that day and show them how it can be searched.”
The Newspapers were scanned into PDFs and Wagner said each page is searchable for key words as well as date and issue.
“It’s going to be one of the online databases that we have made searchable to the public through the museum and archives website,” Wagner said.
It will be accessible to everyone, not just county library card holders.
“For anyone who has used micro-fiche to research, the appeal of a digital archive is welcome News,” Adsett said.
“Through a grant the county was able to digitize 50 years of the Advertiser and since it is available online, historians and genealogists will have a far easier time researching from anywhere in the world.”
The public is invited to Aboyne Hall at the museum on April 4 from 3 to 6pm to celebrate the Advertiser’s 50th anniversary with refreshments, special displays and the official launch of the Newspaper’s digital archive.
