With the cold and winter snow upon us the county OPP is reminding motorists to slow down and drive according to the weather and road conditions.
OPP Constable Jennifer Smith reported that on Jan. 15 45% of all the calls for service to the county OPP were for motor vehicle collisions.
“The time of year we can expect that roads may be icy, especially at intersections and open areas of highway,” Smith said. “Even on bright sunny days, roads can ice up unexpectedly and conditions become treacherous.”
She added that every snowy day, area communication centres for the police are inundated with calls from the public, who want to know the latest in road and weather conditions.
Smith said that is not the responsibility of the dispatchers and, more importantly, it could put someone else’s life at risk if they cannot get through to a police dispatcher for a real emergency.
People who want to know road conditions should call 1-800-265-5407, or they can visit www.ontarioweather.com/winter/roads/ontario.asp.
