Walkers in Fergus raise $5,000 for CMT support

Approximately 80 walkers gathered at Victoria Park in Fergus on Sunday morning to raise funds for, and awareness about, Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT).

CMT is a little-known, but surprisingly common, degenerative disease which disables sufferers by attacking their hands and feet.

While the Sept. 30 walk raised over $5,000, with funds still coming in, raising awareness about the most commonly-inherited nerve related disorders in the world was another key goal for organizers.

“I know our efforts are working,” said Kelly Detta Hall, facilitator for the Southern Ontario CMT Action and Support Group as she addressed the crowd prior to the event. She urged walkers to do their best to spread information about CMT.

“We hope to have some fun and create awareness,” she said, adding, “Even if you tell someone about it, that’s one more person that knows.”
