This summer NeighbourWoods on the Grand will be conducting a tree inventory to help assess the state of Centre Wellington’s urban trees.
They are looking for volunteers who would like to help out. Participants will work in teams of two or three and set their own schedule— generally two hours a week for six to eight weeks. Learn about trees, spend time outside, have some fun and contributing to the community’s urban forest knowledge. It is an excellent way for students to collect volunteer hours.
Volunteers record 31 variables about each tree, for example: height , species, and indicators that reflect the tree’s health, like defoliation, girdling roots, and cracks. At the end of the summer, the field data will be analyzed to generate a report to help better understand and improve the urban canopy.
Training will take place May 29 and June 5 from 5:30 to 8:30pm. Although attending the those dates is ideal, alternate training days can be arranged.
To date, more than 7,000 trees have been examined in in Elora and Fergus. Details about individual trees, as well as the complete report can be found on the NeighbourWoods website at www.eloraenvironmentcentre.ca.
