In response to his attendance at an American water conference, along with two members of Centre Wellington’s water department, councillor Walt Visser explained the importance of keeping up on the issues.
“I’m often asked why we [attend the conferences],” said Visser. “I would like to remind people that without water, we don’t have tourism, we don’t have economic development and we don’t have Centre Wellington.” He added, “There are water wars in the United States and we have to guard our Great Lakes and our water sources. I think it is very important.”
Visser said the recent conference in Denver is the only one in North America that offers a course on a specific topic he considered important.
Mayor Joanne Ross-Zuj said, “our director went to Denver as well. It is rated as one of the best conferences in terms of the amount you can learn and the workshops available. I had the privilege of being at one a couple of years ago and know how much value is there. And what you bring back to the community is so important. Sometimes, it just indicates how well we take care of our local water supply.”
