CENTRE WELLINGTON – The 2020 Food Cycle Ride went virtual and netted $10,750 for the Centre Wellington Food Bank during its two-week event in August.
Forty-five riders, about 25 per cent of the usual number of participants, this year contributed more than 50 per cent of the average proceeds to the local food bank during the previous nine years of rides.
“I think we can feel pretty good about this result, given that the virtual ride took place about six months into the pandemic after a lot of other virtual events were held,” said Harvey Thomson, chair of the five person organizing team.
He noted also that several of the riders raised more than $500, with four teams or individuals over $1,000.
“The riders this year rode above their weight,” he said, adding he hopes next year’s 11th annual ride can return to its traditional one-day format.
