Guelph Country Dances hold their upcoming monthly contra dance at Norfolk Street United Church on Friday March 13th. Doors open at 7.30pm and dancing starts at 8.00pm, ending at 11.00pm. Dancers should enter from Cork Street. General Admission is $10.00. Students and Seniors $5.00. Live music by “Relative Harmony, with caller Judy Greenhill.
Contra dancing is a lot like square dancing, but you need no previous experience, special clothing, or a partner. Everyone is friendly, and someone will ask you to dance! Dances are walked through and taught by a caller, who then prompts the figures to music. It’s customary to change partners when the music stops, so you’ll get to dance with everyone in the room. (Here’s a helpful hint: if someone invites you to dance, just say "yes.") No fancy footwork needed. If you can walk, you can do this type of dancing. Comfortable, casual clothing and soft-soled shoes recommended. You might want to wear layers, as this is a vigorous activity. You will need to bring soft-soled shoes, as we don’t allow boots, outdoor shoes or high heels on the dance floor. You’ll find singles, couples, family groups, seniors, students, and happy folks of all ages at our dances. (By yourself? C’mon down–we’ll set you up with dance partners and new friends!)
The event is non-smoking and alcohol-free. A glass of cider from the market is included in the price of admission. Feel free to arrive early, or linger afterwards, to help load in, set up, then clean up and pack out!
