University of Guelph’s Volunteer Connections releases annual Holiday Giving Guide

GUELPH – For a second year running, a group at the University of Guelph (U of G) has compiled a Holiday Giving Guide to connect people with organizations seeking donations and volunteers.

The guide was previously created by the People and Information Network, until it closed permanently in February 2023.

Student Volunteer Connections at the U of G’s Experiential Learning Hub has since taken on putting the guide together.

This year’s guide includes 31 local nonprofit organizations and charities.

“Student Volunteer Connections hopes this guide inspires individuals to give back to the community, and promotes the amazing work of these local organizations,” officials state.

The guide includes the following requests for donations:

– The Grove Youth Wellness Hubs (seeking baking and craft supplies, pre-packaged snacks, drinks, and personal hygiene products);

– Hospice Wellington (seeking monetary donations and grocery gift cards to purchase kitchen supplies for residences);

– Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington (seeking monetary donations to support its Fergus Garafraxa Village build);

– Stepping Stone shelters (seeking monetary donations  to purchase winter essentials and small toys for shelter residents);

– Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis (seeking monetary donations to support its Rural Women’s Support Program and warm, waterproof mittens and gloves and gift cards for everyday needs);

– Learning Disabilities Association of Wellington County (seeking $10 donations to “open the door for a child to participate in one of our free reading, social skills, or school transition programs); and

– Eden House Care Facility (seeking personal care items to gift to residents).

Volunteers are needed at:

– National Service Dogs (dog raisers, carpool drivers, breeder caretakers, whelping homes);

– Anishnabeg Outreach (to help sort, pack or deliver Spirit Bundles of food and household supplies to Indigenous families);

– Guelph Food Bank (gift wrappers, food drive helpers);

– North End Harvest Market (help with food and events for kids during Christmas Lunch on Dec. 25); and

– The Elliot Community (a piano player for Dec. 7 holiday recital).
