The United Way of Guelph and Wellington has announced the staff, faculty, and students of the University of Guelph raised over $424,000 for the 2007 campaign.
And that donation, along with some recent higher returns, might mean good News for the campaign.
In November, the United Way of Guelph and Wellington was projecting that the 2007 campaign could fall $100,000 short of what it raised in 2006.
Since announcing that shortfall, many individuals and organizations have increased their support. The final results of many workplace campaigns have been coming in higher than last year.
The 2007 United Way campaign chairman Rick McCombie stated, “We are hopeful this shortfall will not be as significant as previously projected.”
The United Way was planning to announce the final campaign results on Dec. 12 at its annual celebration lunch.
As for the university’s donation, “Every year, the dedication and hard work that goes into the University of Guelph’s United Way campaign is inspiring” said Lori Arsenault, the campaign director.
“This year, everyone involved went above and beyond and were therefore able to raise more than $24,000 over their goal.
“We are so thankful to the university for all of its help. It plays such a significant role in this community and its support for the United Way Campaign is a perfect example of their generosity.”
The campaign was successful due to work by over 200 volunteers who organized arranged educational presentations, events, communicated the campaign, solicited donations, and more.
“I’m very proud of our campaign and have thoroughly enjoyed working with all of our volunteers,” said campaign co-chairman Irene Thompson. “The real success of our campaign is the spirit, enthusiasm and commitment that our volunteers and U of G community members have, and our collective desire to make a difference.”
Thompson led the university campaign with co-chairmen Jim Atkinson and Latham French.
Catholic board
The employees of the Wellington Catholic District School Board raised over $48,300 for the 2007 United Way campaign. That is a 13% increase over what the district’s employees raised in 2006.
“The culture of support at the Wellington Catholic School Board is incredible,” said McCombie. We have come to rely on this support as year after year they consistently run strong campaigns. One element that makes the campaign so strong is the support of management and the dedication of outstanding volunteers who run campaigns in each and every school.”
“This school district has demonstrated consistent leadership in this campaign,” said Don Drone, the director of education for school board. “Its purpose resonates with our core values as a publicly funded school system.”
