MOUNT FOREST – Two cats died in a house fire on Durham Street here on Dec. 29.
The residents were not home at the time and no one was hurt during the fire, which caused about $250,000 in damage.
Wellington North Fire Chief Dave Guilbault said the call came in just before 10pm on Dec. 29 after the sound of the fire alarm alerted neighbours.
“When we arrived there was very heavy smoke coming out of the side door of the house which led to the basement,” said Guilbault.
About 35 firefighters in total were on the scene, as well as OPP and EMS services.
Teams from the West Grey and Minto fire departments assisted firefighters from the Arthur and Mount Forest stations.
The cause of the fire is currently undetermined and is still under investigation.
Guilbault put the estimated damage at $250,000 and said the house was insured.
“The house has to be completely redone inside,” said Guilbault.
“Even though the main fire was confined to the basement, the smoke damage was extensive throughout the house.”
