Wellington County welcomed two babies on New Year’s Day this year.
The first baby of 2018 arrived at 12:27am on Jan. 1. The baby boy was delivered by Amy Sjaarda of Countryside Midwives of Palmerston.
The baby’s family did not want any other information released.
The second baby was born several hours later to excited parents Janelle and Alan Capell of Southgate Township.
Baby Sullivan arrived at 5pm on Jan. 1.
“He wasn’t due until Jan. 12,” said Janelle, a teacher in Kenilworth.
She said she was hoping her baby would be born in the new year to make it easier when he gets into school.
“All throughout, I was like, ‘Okay, he just needs to make it to 2018,’ and then we made it to midnight, (I said) ‘Ah, okay we can relax now,’” she said.
“Then in the morning time, I started to have contractions …”
Sullivan has two siblings, Quinn, 4, and Aubrey, 3, who were excited to meet him.
“Good,” said Quinn, smiling, when asked how she liked having a new brother.
“It’s a fight over who gets to hold on to him and snuggle him,” said Janelle.
She added it was “exciting” to have one of the first babies of the year.
“We definitely didn’t plan on having the first baby of the year,” added Alan, laughing.
Both mom and baby are healthy and at home.
“It was a great delivery,” said Janelle. “The hospital and all of the staff were amazing and it was so nice being right in Mount Forest.”
According to Gianni Accettola, patient care manager for North Wellington Health Care, no babies were born on New Year’s Day at Palmerston and District Hospital or Groves hospital in Fergus.
