The Centre Wellington Rotary Club has joined forces with the Centre Wellington Food Bank to ensure that everyone who depends on the food bank will receive a turkey for their Christmas Dinner.
The club has arranged to sell tickets at a number of township and retail merchant outlets. By simply purchasing a $20 turkey ticket, people will have fed a family for the holiday.
Scotia Bank, in Fergus, is selling the tickets and also matching every ticket it sells, so each purchase there results in feeding two families, said Rotary Club member Dave Rushton.
In addition, several merchants in Elora and Fergus have agreed to support the effort and people can identify them by the poster or gold counter card on display. It has a picture of a turkey on the back of a truck.
As well, Centre Wellington Township, the Fergus Information Centre and Sportsplex, as well as the Elora Legion have tickets available.
Rushton said the club had invited food bank director Mike Counsel to speak to members, and after his talk, the members decided they should do something to help those in need.
“We said, ‘This is really important to ensure these families are fed,’ ” Rushton said.
He added the club members will take the cash from the ticket sales and give it to the food bank.
“The food bank buys the actual turkeys,” he said. “We convert a $20 bill into a turkey.
And, he added, “We probably have about 20 merchants helping.”
If you or your workplace would like to participate please drop by of the ticket sellers or contact Rick Roberts (846-5694) or Rushton (846-0971) of the Centre Wellington Rotary Club. The food bank will issue tax receipts for all who participate.
