Traffic concerns near Maltby Road

Traffic concerns on local roads seems to be an ongoing theme at Puslinch council and the Nov. 2 meeting proved to be no exception.

Councillor Wayne Stokley found it interesting that near the beginning of the meeting there were two residents who wanted to talk about traffic in the Maltby Road area.

“They were concerned primarily with the number of trucks.”

We reassured them with Don [road superintendent Creed], that the trucks were primarily there for the development of the golf course.

However, there may be more traffic once there is reconstruction of the road.

Stokley said one comment was even with the amount of truck traffic, residents still feel the road is unsafe.

The other issue was that once the golf course begins operation, there will be a fair amount of traffic on the road.

“We made need to look at ways to ensure the safety of residents in the area.

He suggested talking to Creed during the township road tour.

Councillor Susan Fielding said an issue came up at the meeting to contact the OPP and get the speed monitor out there.

“Hopefully that will add some traffic calming to their issues. Sometimes it seems if you are a pedestrian or on a bicycle, it seems like traffic is going very fast.”

She said it is hard to determine without seeing the speeds coming up on a monitor.

Fielding believes that bringing in a speed monitor would be a good first step. The hope is to get the use of the one used by the OPP, which records data.

If the police see the data, it would determine if enforcement is needed, Fielding said.

“I think it’s just a given that the road is just going to get busier.”

Mayor Dennis Lever asked that when the golf course was proposed, if there was a traffic study included regarding potential increases in traffic.

Clerk Brenda Law believes there was a study, but she did not remember exactly what was stated – but that it would be on file.

Lever recommended bringing the file out, and working to get a speed monitor in place.
