PUSLINCH – Morning traffic was snarled on Brock Road South just north of Highway 401 on Dec. 10 when a tractor-trailer caught fire.
Puslinch interim fire chief Brad Bigrigg said the call came in around 7:34am and crews were dispatched.
“The rear axle bearing seized and the rear tires caught fire,” Bigrigg said.
“We separated the tractor from the trailer and got the fire out.”
The vehicle was in the centre lane and north- and south-bound traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction for about an hour while the vehicle was moved.
The Guelph/Eramosa fire department was called in as well because one of Puslinch’s tanker trucks is in the shop for repairs.
Bigrigg said the department has two tankers and agreements with Rockwood and Cambridge fire departments, so he feels there’s still good coverage for residents and businesses in the township while one is temporarily out of commission.
“When these vehicles get to their half-life, they often need major service,” he said.
Damage to the tractor-trailer is estimated at $50,000.
There were no injuries to the driver or firefighters.
