Guelph-Eramosa Mayor Chris White said the work done by 33 volunteers to keep five community ice rinks going this winter was “absolutely critical” for the township.
“Without you folks we wouldn’t have them,” White said of the rinks, which he called an integral part of Canadian culture.
The volunteers were recognized by council on Monday night for their efforts this winter.
“This is truly a unique thing,” councillor Doug Breen said of having so many outdoor rinks in such a small municipality, considering the rinks are disappearing in other areas.
Calling such rinks one of the best thing about Canadian winters, Breen said the township truly appreciates the efforts of the volunteers.
The rest of council also lauded the volunteers for their work, including their help in addressing insurance issues several years ago.
