CENTRE WELLINGTON – The township received $2,969,050 from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) in the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Township officials acknowledged the contribution at the Key Projects Open House on Oct. 22.
As host for Elements Casino, Centre Wellington receives a payment from OLG annually. Since the gaming site opened in December 2003, Centre Wellington has received a total of $42,091,636.
“Today, we express our gratitude to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation for their vital investment in Centre Wellington,” stated Mayor Shawn Watters in a township press release.
“This support not only fuels vital community initiatives but also empowers us to enhance the quality of life for our residents, fostering a vibrant future for our residents.
“These essential revenue payments have a significant effect on our community.”
The township reinvests the revenues into the community to support local programs, initiatives, arts and culture, and infrastructure.
Projects in 2023 made possible by OLG contributions include:
– Beatty Line rehabilitation between Sideroads 18 and 15;
– traffic calming measures across the township;
– pavement management on Argyll St. from Belsyde Ave. to McAlister St. in Fergus;
– pavement management on North Queen St. from Colborne St. to Moir St. in Elora;
– work on East Mill Street in Elora;
– trunk storm sewers on Moir St. to the Gorge in Elora;
– Rennie Blvd. cul-de-sac drainage improvements near Belwood Lake; and
– first phase of servicing on Dickson Drive employment lands in Fergus.
In 2023, council approved $108,000 from OLG funding and $65,000 from taxation for a total of $173,000 for Community Impact Grants.
Last year, 34 community grants were awarded.
