Mapleton council has approved at least $37,400 in engineer design costs for the addition of dressing rooms at the PMD Arena.
The bill could be as high as $49,900 if a site grading and servicing design is required, but Clerk Patty Sinnamon said that may not be needed because the township might have those designs from the original construction.
Council previously approved $5,000 for preliminary work, and now the parks, recreation, and culture committee has obtained prices for the formal design of the addition. The total is below $50,000 so the township does not have to tender, and last week it voted in favour of waiving the requirement of three bids for the job.
Because Tacoma Engineers Inc. “has already completed a preliminary drawing and has been involved with this project since the beginning,” Sinnamon recommended council award the work to that firm.
It worked on a similar addition to the Howick Township arena, which has a layout almost identical to Drayton’s.
“It makes sense to carry on with them,” Sinnamon said.
Councillors agreed and unanimously approved the bid from Tacoma, which includes:
– $1,900 for site plan designs;
– $19,800 for architectural and structural drawings, including a floor plan;
– $11,100 for mechanical and electrical drawings;
– $4,600 for a construction review; and
– $12,500 if the site grading and servicing design is required.
Council also approved Sinnamon’s recommendation that the money for the engineering work be taken from development charges, because the addition work can be attributed to increased community growth. The design work will be included in the township’s 2008 capital budget.
