FERGUS – Attention Grade 2 teachers in Fergus, Elora and Salem schools.
The Fergus Grand Theatre has started a Theatre for Young Audiences program for Grade 2 students, offering the opportunity to see live theatre geared to a young audience, for free, through a partnership with the Upper Grand District School Board.
The theatre has booked Dufflebag Theatre to present two performances of The Three Musketeers on May 21.
“With the return of a program at the Fergus Grand Theatre for school-aged children, we are able to bring in some of Canada’s best theatre for young audiences programming here to Centre Wellington,” stated theatre coordinator Eric Goudie in a press release.
“Through these plays, concerts and other performances, we hope to educate, entertain and inspire the next generation of theatre lovers.”
Introducing young students to the world of live theatre offers numerous educational and social benefits, officials state, such as:
– enhanced creative and critical thinking;
– improved literacy skills;
– fosters social skills like empathy, teamwork and communication; and
– teaches “timeless values” like friendship, bravery and loyalty.
“I am excited to welcome local students to the Fergus Grand Theatre for the Theatre for Young Audiences program,” stated Centre Wellington Mayor Shawn Watters.
“Live theatre brings our community together, sparks creativity and inspires young minds.
“Thank you to the Upper Grand District School Board for partnering with the township to make this experience possible – I hope it leaves a lasting impact on youth in our community.”
There will be two performances on May 21, one at 10am and the other at 1pm. The theatre has 250 seats and four accessible spaces.
Eligible public schools include Elora, JD Hogarth, James McQueen, John Black, Salem, Victoria Terrace, and Ponsonby.
