Township helps sponsor fly fishing competition to be held in Grand and Conestogo rivers

Centre Wellington will be supporting this summer’s fly fishing competition through a reallocation of its community impact grants.

On March 19, council recieved a report on the funds. Council delegated approval to the community services advisory committee the allocation of the additional funding for the community impact grants during the 2018 budget process.

On Feb. 21, the advisory committee passed a motion endorsing an allocation of $1,500 to the National Fly Fishing Competition.

The 16th annual National Fly Fishing Championship will take place in Centre Wellington from June 6 to 8.

The competition will begin with practice rounds on the river on June 3 and 4.

It is expected the competition will attract anglers and spectators from across Canada, with approximately 300 participants.

This event is organized to support the Centre Wellington Big Brothers/Big Sisters in its fundraising efforts for the community.

As a platinum sponsor, the township will be recognized in all advertising material.

While the event is to be based in Centre Wellington, venues will include the Grand and Conestogo rivers as well as the Upper Credit Trout Club.

There will be four river sessions and one pond bankfishing session.

The Grand and Conestogo rivers are tailwater fisheries, stocked annually each spring with up to 40,000 brown trout, many of which hold over from year to year, producing some of North America’s best trophy brown trout approaching the 30-inch size (76cm).
