Tour de Elora is back; this year it includes dogs

ELORA – Tour de Elora is back for its fourth year –  stronger, better and with a great new addition: dogs.

Hosted by Elora Fitness and Performance Center and RT Health, this year’s  event will welcome dogs for the first time.

The tour will be holding the 10 for 10 during the month of October with a goal of collectively reaching 10,000km through walking, running or cycling and raising $10,000.

All proceeds from the event will go to support the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.

The impact of cancer is astounding, officials say. Chances are you know someone – likely more than one person – who has been afflicted with the disease.

The event was started by Gillian Alton, who at the age of 31 was diagnosed with breast cancer.

She started Tour de Elora as a tangible way to give back following her cancer treatment at Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.

To date, the fundraiser has raised over $30,000.

You can enter as an individual or a team. Each time you bike/walk/run from Oct. 1 to  31, just log the number of kilometres you completed through the website tourdeelora.weebly.com.

Most cell phones, fitness bracelets, smart watches or cardio equipment will track this for you, organizers say.

Your kilometres will be added to the group goal of 10,000km.

Prizes will be awarded to the individual who logs the most kilometres.

Encourage your friends and family to support you by making a donation online to support the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.

Participants are asked to aim to raise at least $100 in donations. Winners will be announced via livestream on Nov. 2.

Does your business have what it takes to take home the coveted Tour de Elora Trophy?

Track your kilometres as a team. The business that logs the largest average kilometers per participant will bring home the Tour de Elora trophy and prize pack.

To account for differences in numbers of participants between groups, total kilometres will be averaged per person to decide the winner.

There will be a new award this year: Top Dog.

From Oct. 1 to 31, just log the number of kilometres your dog completes through the website as well. Your dog’s kilometres will be added to the group total of 10,000 km.

A prize will be awarded for the dog who logs the most kilomtres.
