The Speed River will play host to a number of strange contraptions this Saturday as Wellington area hosts its 22nd annual Speed River Raft Race.
This event is open to all Scout Troops and Venturer Companies and it is rumored there will even be an advisors and leaders category this year. The race will take place at 10am on June 9 in Riverside Park.
In preparation for the pioneering skills event local Scouts have been busy build ing rafts from wood spars, and twine as part of the ‘traditional’ category as well as anything suitable to their imagination for the open category.
Past designs have included traditional flat rafts as well as more inventive paddle-wheel rafts or an entire canoe-like structure made solely from cardboard. The 1st Guelph Firefighter Venturer Company has been busy lashing together its raft of empty water jugs and poles. “We have combined the traditions of Tom Sawyer with the style of Myth Busters,” boasted Venturer Scout Ryan Borho. “It may not be pretty, but it will float.”
Everyone is invited to join the raft teams Saturday morning and cheer on all the builders, racers, and Scouts.
