Thieves try to steal ATM from Elora gas station

For the second time in two months, thieves tried to steal an automated teller machine (ATM) from a Centre Wellington gas station – but this time unsuccessfully.

On March 10 at about 3am, Wellington County OPP received a report of a break and enter at the Esso gas station beside Tim Hortons on Wellington Road 7 in Elora.

Police say two suspects broke a window at the front of the station and attempted to remove the ATM. The vehicle involved was a pickup truck last seen travelling northbound on Wellington Road 7.

On Jan. 12 two male suspects broke into the Esso gas station in Salem and stole the ATM with a dark-coloured SUV with a roof rack. The vehicle was last seen travelling northbound on Wellington Road 7. The incident is still being investigated by the OPP.

Police would not say whether the two crimes are connected but they did note the OPP is working with police in Waterloo region, where there have been similar crimes involving ATMs.

Anyone with information regarding these incidents can contact the Wellington OPP at 1-888-310-1122. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or submit a tip at www.csgw.tips.
