The Lightning win silver in tournament

The Saugeen Maitland Midget “AA” Lightning team came up a goal short of the gold medal at the Two Nations College Prep tournament on the weekend of Dec. 5 to 7 in Brampton.

On the morning of Dec. 5 the Lightning opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over the Alaska Icebreakers.  Lighting points in the game (goals,assists) go to: Lexi Smith (2,1); Jocelyn Ballantyne (1,1); Taylor MacDonald (one assist); Maddie Duncan (one assist); Hannah Herman (one assist); and Cassidy Mason (one assist).   

In the second game the Lightning beat the Calgary Fire 2-1 with points going to:  Mel Nolan (one goal); Neve Van Pelt (one goal); Avery Reeves (two assists); and Katie Heath (one assist).

On the afternoon of Dec. 6, the Lightning players won against the West Chester Quakers, a team from close to Philadelphia, 7-0.  

Points for Saugeen Maitland  (goals,assists) went to:  Mason (two goals); Madison Davey (1,2); Herman (one goal); Reeves (1,3); Nolan (one goal); Duncan (one goal); Kelsey Dixon (two assists); Heath (two assists); Van Pelt (two assists); Erin Near (one assist); and Natalie Nixon (one assist).  

The Lightning won its evening game against the Aurora Panthers 5-0.

Points in the game (goals, assists) went to Smith (two goals); Van Pelt (one goal); Nolan (1,1); Reeves (one goal); Brooke Schroeder (one assist); Dixon (one assist); Herman (one assist); Mason (one assist); and Ballantyne (one assist). Rebecca Ropp was solid in net and earned the shut-out.

The shut-out on Dec. 6 was enough to put the Lightning into the semi-final game early Dec. 7 against the Guelph Gryphons.

The Lightning came out on top with a 2-1 score. Points (goals, assists) in the game went to Dixon (one goal); Smith (one goal); Nolan (one assist); Mason (one assist); and Davey (one assist).  

The win meant the Lightning played in the tournament final on the afternoon of Dec. 7.

Smith from the Bolts scored the opener in the first period, with assists from Duncan and MacDonald.

However the Wolves tied it in the second.  

With time winding down in the third period, Sudbury scored, handing the disappointed Lightning the 2-1 loss.
