The British are coming to Belwood

The Belwood Summer Theatre is back.

After two successful productions in 2007 the company is pleased to be returning with three new shows.

The first one, Alan Ayckbourn’s hilarious British farce Relatively Speaking, opens July 10. It is a deceptively simple little play – an hilarious tale of some young (but not too faithful) lovers, some concerned parents, and an incriminating pair of slippers – or is it?

Fans of British farce may be familiar with some of Ayckbourn’s other works, such as The Norman Conquests, How the Other Half Loves, and Absurd Person Singular.  Known for bending the laws of time and to hilarious effect, Ayckbourn wrote Relatively Speaking as an exercise in creating humour without using those devices, an effort to learn the “rules” of good writing before going on to smash those rules to hilarious smithereens.

Thankfully for the audience, the results are the same, and the near-constant guffaws emanating from the cast and crew during rehearsals hint at a very funny evening’s entertainment for Belwood audiences.

The show is being directed by R.D. Branton, who’s last Belwood effort was The Melville Boys.

“The Belwood stage is live again and I encourage you to come and enjoy a light summer evening of British humour,” said Branton.

The show opens July 10 and runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8pm. Tickets are $15 each, with a group rate of $12 for ten or more.

Tickets may be reserved by calling the Grinder box office at 519-780-7593, by visiting the website at www.grinderproductions.org, or at the door.
