Taste Real initiative wins 2012 tourism award

Taste Real, Guelph and Wellington’s regional culinary tourism organization, was recently awarded the 2012 Ontario Culinary Tourism Leadership Award.

The award, presented to a community or organization that has taken on a leadership role in promoting culinary tourism in Ontario, was presented at the 8th annual Ontario Tourism Summit held in London from Oct. 22 to 24.

Taste Real supports local farms, producers and small businesses to build stronger rural communities and its mission is to grow one of the most vibrant, local food economies and tourism destinations in Ontario. There are over 120 partners in the Taste Real program throughout Wellington County.

The City of Guelph Tourism Services department is one of six founding partners that steers the strategic development of Taste Real. Other municipal partners are the county, Township of Centre Wellington, Town of Minto, Township of Wellington North, and the Township of Mapleton.

Developed with stakeholder engagement, Taste Real is built upon the many successes of promoting local food that have taken place across the region, including the work originally started by Guelph Wellington Local Food at the Guelph Community Health Centre, under the leadership of Kate Vsetula.
