WELLINGTON COUNTY – A taskforce on attainable housing in Wellington County is working on recommendations for a strategy to deal with the rising cost of accommodations.
The taskforce group met May 6, and Wellington Place administrator Jana Burns gave a presentation on current housing realities in Wellington County.
Burns also led a group discussion on initial Attainable Housing Strategy recommendations.
“This subject is a priority project this year for the county and there is great interest from the member municipalities in learning about possible interventions,” states economic development director Crystal Ellis in a staff report.
“The group will meet at the end of the month to hold the second half of the meeting and to plan next steps.”
“I do believe this is a very important thing going forward, attainable housing,” said councillor George Bridge at the May 27 county council meeting.
“This is a real key one going forward,” said Bridge, who chairs the county’s economic development committee.
“We’ve seen just this spike of our housing costs going up. So, a lot of people can’t (afford a home).”
Bridge added, “I know we’ve done some things at the local level to counterbalance and we’ve done some things in Minto and in Wellington North, about getting more ability to handle the more density on people’s lots out there and doing some secondary rental income properties and things like that, so we need to really get everything in place.”
