Three members of the Centre Wellington’s Superstars Baton Club competed at the 2018 WFNBTA World Baton Twirling Championships held in Lillehammer, Norway, March 28 to April 1.
Alyssa George, 15, Elsie Post, 13, and Makenzie Worton, 16, were part of Team Canada, which consisted of 24 athletes from across Canada.
There were 683 athletes at the championships representing 18 different countries over a four day competition.
Last year, these members of Superstars Baton Club qualified to represent Canada at the world championships overseas. This baton twirling competition occurs every three years with a different host country each time.
Each athlete competing in Norway had to qualify in their respective countries as one of the top three competitors in their age division.
At the championship, George placed 14th of 22 athletes in the junior 2baton division and 15th of 28 in the junior x-strut division.
Post took home a 6th place medal in the preteen 2baton division out of 26 athletes and then placed 8th in the preteen x-strut division out of 33 athletes, 9th in the preteen solo division out of 31 athletes and 12th in the preteen rhythmic twirl division out of 34 athletes.
Worton was a member of the Junior Dance Twirl Team, which placed 7th out of 10 teams.
All three members competed on the Twirl Corps, consisting of members from both Superstars and Stars United Baton Club in Richmond Hill. This team placed 4th out of eight other corps at the championships.
Baton twirling is composed of numerous athletic skills all rolled into one activity.
Officials offered congratulations to the three athletes on a “great showing and awesome results at the world championships.”
