MAPLETON – Hunting with guns on Sundays could be allowed in Mapleton as early as Sept. 1.
On June 11, Mapleton resident Ray Kuper delegated to council to request the ban on Sunday gun hunting be lifted, and on July 9, council voted to lift the ban.
Hunting in Ontario is regulated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF), but it is up to municipalities whether or not to permit hunting on Sundays.
So Mapleton clerk Larry Wheeler is set to notify the MNRF that the township supports Sunday gun hunting and request the MNRF process a regulatory amendment to include Mapleton in its list of municipalities where Sunday gun hunting is permitted.
According to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, almost 200 other municipalities in the province have already lifted Sunday gun hunting bans. This includes Wellington North, North Perth and Perth East.
In Mapleton, discharging firearms was already permitted on Sundays, but for target practice only.
Hunting on Sundays was already permitted too, but only with a bow and arrow.
