Summer theatre is back at McCrae House

GUELPH – Backyard Theatre returns to McCrae House in August with War and Peace: Songs and Monologues presented by Rhapsodius  (Andrew Craig).

In its 10th season, Backyard Theatre has become an annual summer tradition, featuring one-act plays that respond to the life and accomplishments of doctor, soldier and poet Lt. Col. John McCrae.

War and Peace: Songs and Monologues runs from August 15 to 24, with shows at 7pm Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 2pm matinees on Saturdays.

What are the causes of war? Is war simply human nature?

Is the goal of world peace realistic?

Artivist and educator Craig presents a one-person, one-act show that poses these questions and more, and offers possible answers.

The show features some of the greatest songs about war and peace composed in the 20th century, by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Bob Marley.

Rhapsodius weaves together these songs with deeply considered monologues that draw equally from the ancient writings of Sun Tzu as well as from contemporary authors such as Gwynne Dyer, Margaret McMillan, Pema Chodron and the Dalai Lama.

The show aims to educate, enlighten, uplift and inspire in equal measure and leave you with the sense that a peaceful world is indeed possible, and that we can co-create it.

Tickets are $25 each and are available on Eventbrite or by calling 519-836-1221.

McCrae House is located at 108 Water St. and is wheelchair accessible via the barrier-free entrance at the back of the house.
