Summer Concert Series returns for 10th season

WELLINGTON COUNTY  — July 13 marked the beginning of the Summer Concert Series at the Wellington County Museum and Archives’ heritage barn in Fergus. The event will be running every Thursday from 7 to 8pm (minus Aug. 10) until Aug. 24.

The series has been occurring for 10 years now according to the Wellington County website.

“We want to highlight local musicians and sort of give them a platform to get their music out there,” said the museum’s programming supervisor, Katie Clarke.

Although the museum itself will not be open during the time of the concerts, the back half of it where the public washrooms are located will be.

Clarke mentioned that in the first event of the series on July 13, around 90 people showed up. Knowing the turn out for the first week, she says people attending should plan to come early if they want a good spot, and to bring lawn chairs in case of the chance that there are not enough provided for the crowd.

The event will be semi-outside as the barn will be open with performances being done inside. Clarke says it is pet friendly, so any furry friends are welcome to join in on the music.

At the next concert on July 20, the HighBanks Bluegrass Band will be playing. Glenn George, a staff member at the Advertiser is a stand-up bass player for the band.

George says he has been playing the upright bass for nearly 40 years, and joined his first bluegrass band when he was 20 years old.

He stated that he is nervous for the event because he is the newest guy in the band, and it can be hard to get the material down right. However, he is also excited to see what the night will bring.

“[I am] definitely excited, because I don’t get to play locally very often for family and friends to hear the band,” said George.
