Successful fundraising by Hillsburgh committee

HILLSBURGH – A $4,000 donation has been received by the Let’s Get Hillsburgh Growing (LGHG) committee to help support the purchase of 10 large downtown snowflake Christmas decorations.
The funding comes from the board of the Christian Disciples Church as part of the disposition of assets from the sale of the church, which remains the home of Century Church Theatre.
Erin councillor Jeff Duncan included the grant for the LED fixtures in his final report as council’s representative on LGHG.
“The committee will need council and staff support to ensure we can obtain hydro from the street lights to allow them to be illuminated,” he said.
LGHG fundraised more than $5,200 to support the 12th annual flower basket and street planter program. This covered the cost of purchasing and maintaining the flowers from May to October.
Sales of fall decorating kits were the best ever, with 80 sold for $45 each, generating profits of about $22.50 per kit.
LGHG partnered with the Erin District High School art program and selected a logo for tee shirts and buttons. They also held a slogan contest, and printed two batches of shirts saying “Hillsburgh – Uphill Both Ways since 1821”.
The committee made a donation to Ross R. MacKay Parent Council to help fund painted outdoor play surfaces, new basketball hoops and backboards, and new balls and a storage trunk.
LGHG also held its 12th Family Fun Day, funded by community donations, with the help of about two dozen volunteers.
This fall, LGHG got permission from the County of Wellington and planted 600 daffodil bulbs on the eastern large slope beside Trafalgar Road, north of the village.
The committee is “a great link between the public and Council, providing and fundraising for initiatives that the town does not have the staff resources or mandate to do,” said Duncan.
“I hope council and staff can allow them to continue in their community endeavors in a very similar fashion as they have done very successfully since 2006.”
