GUELPH – The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is reporting that despite the challenges and disruptions to learning in the past few years, UGDSB students have performed at or above the provincial average in six of the eight Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessments conducted in the 2021-22 school year.
Grade 3 students scored an average 73.3 in reading compared to the provincial average of 73.1. In writing they scored 64.1 compared to the provincial average of 64.9 and in math they scored 56.1 compared to the provincial average of 59.
Grade 6 students in the board bested the provincial averages in all categories – 87.1 in reading compared to the provincial 84.9; 85.9 in writing compared to provincial score of 84.1; and 48 in math compared to the provincial average of 47.2.
Grade 9 students also came out ahead of the provincial average scoring 56.4 in math to the provincial average of 52.3 and 83.2 in literacy compared to the provincial average of 82.1.
“The UGDSB knows there is still work that remains to be done. The board is committed to the academic success and well-being of all students and to ensuring equity of access and outcomes for all students,” board chair Linda Busuttil stated in a Nov. 3 press release.
“The board will analyze its individual board and school data once it is released to determine areas of strengths and needs.”
In addition, the UGDSB will continue to focus on its reimagined program services, which have a particular focus on literacy and math, officials state. Last year the board launched a multi-phase plan that focuses on student success and learning interventions.
“We will continue to provide targeted supports to students, including our elementary reading intervention program led by early reading teachers, our intermediate reading support program, and our secondary learning support program,” stated director of education Peter Sovran.
