Students explore skilled trades with alternative education at College Heights Secondary School

GUELPH – The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) is inviting students and families to explore alternative education pathways through alternative education at College Heights Secondary School (CHSS), through events designed to showcase unique hands-on learning and specialized skills training.

In September, CHSS launched an expanded alternative education program tailored for students in Grades 11, 12, and 12+, featuring Enhanced Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) course bundles and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) in sectors essential for workforce development.

Fields of study include construction, health/wellness, horticulture/landscaping, hospitality, manufacturing, and transportation.

The program will offer “real-world skill-building opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities like CHSS’s greenhouse, welding booths, autobody paint area, and commercial baking kitchen,” UGDSB officials state.

Grade 10 tech days

CHSS is offering Grade 10 students the chance to explore these fields through interactive Tech Days, that include hands-on activities and a lunch information session (lunch is provided), and run from 10:30am to 2pm.

Students interested in hands-on skilled trades education can experience these career-focused programs in action and learn about how to prepare for SHSM and OYAP opportunities.
