Students and teachers run for a cause

Teachers and students at Centre Wellington District High School held their Terry Fox Run in the morning of Sept. 26.

Grade 9 and 12 students began their run at approximately 10:30am, and the Grade 10 and 11 students began theirs at approximately 11:05am. Each group ran for about 30 minutes to raise money for cancer research.

The school has been participating in the Terry Fox Run for over 18 years now. “We know it’s something we do every year and the kids do a good job, says Jeff Brubacher, Physical Education teacher at CWDHS. “We want the kids to think larger than themselves and be a compassionate community.”

Over the last two weeks or so, the students of the two Outdoor Physical Education classes have been organizing the event.

“If you have a lot of heart into it, then it’s easy to do,” said Grade 12 student Rebecca Kooiman.

Kooiman said one of the challenges that came along with organizing the run was that there wasn’t much time. This is the first year she has helped organized the event.

Kooiman has experienced the loss of a loved one due to breast cancer, which inspired her to be more involved in organizing and participating.

“My Outdoor Ed class showed a lot of support because we lost a Grade 11 student to cancer last year.”

The school was able to raise around $3,000 to put towards finding a cure for cancer.
