Grade 7 and 8 students from St. John Catholic School in Arthur escaped the classroom last week to shop for a cause.
On May 29 students teamed up with Wellington OPP, Wellington North Fire Services, and Guelph Wellington EMS to shop for the local food bank.
The 10 teams were given $100 and their task was to shop for a family, getting closest to $100 without going over.
“The students learn, we do business with the local grocery store, and 100 per cent of $1,000 worth of groceries goes to the local food bank,” said former Wellington North mayor Ray Tout.
“So it’s win-win-win for the community all around.”
TD Bank donated $1,000 per class. This was the fourth school for the Shop with a Cop program. The fifth event will happen in the fall.
“The students learn about healthy shopping, about giving back to the community, it builds relationships with our emergency services,” said Constable Rhonda Watt. “It’s important for the kids to know that we are involved in the local community, not only in crisis situations but also in positive relationships for the community.”
“It feels good to give back to the community,” said student Delany Tone.
All teams came very close to the $100 mark, with no one going over. However, riding in the emergency vehicles blaring the sirens, may have been their favourite part.
